Snob Trek: The Royal Generation
Exemption

by Christopher Jon Petit (petitc@rpi.edu)
This is my 1st attempt at a story - in this case, a crossover between StarTrek and nobility - comments are welcomed
19, 22 November 1992

Fade into a nicely jeweled Enterprise with ivory carvings littered about the hull.

Picard:
King's Personal Log. The Stardate is, naturally, 31415.9. We are en route to the Blash-mif fiefdom, to collect their long-overdue tariffs. They are a most uncivilized people...they don't even have serfs to serve their every need. What a terrifying thought!

Cut to the bridge. We see Duke Data walking off the bridge into the turbolift.

Riker:
So, Dutchess Deanna, have you reconsidered my proposal yet?
Deanna:
Certainly not! You are an uncivilized and undignified person, and a sorry excuse for a member of the Table!
Riker:
But you said you wanted a Prince Charming in your life, did you not?
Deanna:
Yes, I did. But, I meant Prince CHARMING, NOT an uncouth worm like you!
Riker:
I am above you in the Table. I can have you kicked out. Now, do what I want, woman!

Riker reaches for Deanna, but she soundly slaps him across the face.

Deanna:
Maybe someday you'll learn you cannot get everything you want, PRINCE Riker.
Riker:
Do not throw words at me. You are mine!

Riker slams Deanna to the deck.

Enterprise warps out of sight.

Picard walks onto the bridge and sees Riker trying to 'have his way' with Deanna.

Picard:
WHAT ARE YOU DOING, NUMBER ONE?!

Riker slowly gets off Deanna.

Riker:
(Under his breath)This isn't finished yet, not by a long shot.

Riker looks at Deanna for a second, then slowly, defiantly turns his head towards Picard.

Riker:
Your majesty, I was just...
Picard:
SILENCE!! We shall have a special meeting of the Table tonight, at 1900 hours. BE THERE!

Riker glares at Picard, but says nothing. Picard gently extends his hand to Deanna.

Picard:
M'lady, are you alright?

Deanna takes his hand and slowly gets up off the deck.

Deanna:
I am now.
Picard:
That Riker is too much sometimes. He shall learn how to treat a lady.
Deanna:
I don't think so, your majesty.
Picard:
Riker will be punished. I shall see to it.
Deanna:
I know you will try your best, but Riker has friends.
Picard:
I can handle any of his "friends."
Deanna:
Good luck.

She blows him a kiss. In reply, Picard bows chivalrously, and leaves the bridge.

Camera follows Picard into the richly upholstered turbolift. Picard sighs to himself.

Picard:
10 Forward.

The Turbolift slowly begins its descent.

Picard:
I wonder what I'll do about Prince Riker. He's just so arrogant.

Picard thinks to himself for a few more seconds, then the turbolift slows and stops at 10-Forward. The doors slide open, and Picard steps out.

Guinan:
What'll you have, your majesty? A scotch? Burbon? Romulan Ale?
Picard:
A scotch, thank you.

Guinan retrieves the drinks from the replicator.

Guinan:
What's the problem? Is Riker being a nuisance again?
Picard:
Yes. Again. He's become more trouble than he's worth.
Guinan:
Sometimes, you just have to be patient.
Picard:
But he tried to take Deanna.
Guinan:
I see. So, you're going to bring him before the Table?
Picard:
Damn right! He has to learn discipline, and must be punished.
Guinan:
I guess you have to do whatever you feel is right.

Picard finishes his drink and leaves 10 Forward, somewhat more calm. He enters the turbolift.

Picard:
Table room.

The turbolift slowly starts to move. As it stops, the doors open. We can see six chairs seated around a heavy, black stone table, with only a bright blue glow overhead. The center of the table is hollowed out - a seventh chair is positioned there. Riker is seated in it. Deanna, Data, Geordi, Dr. Crusher, and a strange-looking man in priestly garb are in five of the six seats. Picard takes a seat.

Picard:
This meeting of the Table can now begin. First, let it be recorded upon Prince Riker's scroll that he has acted in a most ungentlemanly manner towards a charming lady of the Table.

Deanna blushes slightly, and smiles.

Computer:
Recorded, your majesty.
Picard:
Also record that Deanna is acting as the prosecutor, and Riker will be defended by...
Riker:
Just a minute...YOUR majesty...

Picard turns bright red. He waits long enough to count to 10.

Picard:
What is it, PRINCE Riker.
Riker:
How can I be sure that you have picked someone who shall defend me and my honor appropiately.
Picard:
If you would let me finish...
Riker:
No. YOU let ME finish! I am well versed in Table proceedings. After all, I AM a prince...something that SOME people here have apparently forgotten.

He glances threatingly at every member of the Table.

Picard:
Then you claim the right?
Riker:
None other.
Picard:
You understand the additional penalties that may be incured by this act of borderline arrogance?
Riker:
I do.
Picard:
Then it is granted. Computer, record that Prince Riker, in accordance with current Table procedures, is defending himself, and may be subject to harsher treatment from this court.
Computer:
It is so recorded, your majesty.

Picard now pulls his chair a bit closer, almost wanting to smell the fear on Riker's breath, but Riker will have no part of it. He maintains his composure.

Picard:
Then let us turn to the proceedings. Prince Riker, as accused, you have right of first speaking in your defense. Have you anything to say?
Riker:
Only that Deanna has, in the past, shown strong feelings for me.
Deanna:
That was QUITE long ago, PRINCE Riker, and I prefer we KEEP it that way.

Riker sighs wistfully.

Picard:
Have you anything else to say in your defense, Prince Riker?
Riker:
I do not, your majesty. What else can be said? In fact, I believe we can end this trial right here, and spare Deanna any further indignity.
Picard:
This trial cannot be ended until proceedings are complete, unless...
Riker:
Unless the person on trial accepts his or her guilt. I so accept it. I...I'm sorry, Deanna.
Deanna:
You should have been more careful. But, you know what must be done?
Riker:
I do.
Deanna:
Then it shall be done. May I leave the Table hearing now? My job as prosecutor is complete.
Picard:
Certainly, m'lady.

Deanna gets up, curtseys, and leaves the room. The camera follows her out the door. As the door closes behind her, she weeps.

The camera fades back into the Table.

Picard:
Well then, I believe, in light of the situation, we won't press any extra charges upon you.
Riker:
Is there any reason for this, your majesty?
Picard:
Because, by admitting your guilt, you have spared Deanna her possible loss of dignity, and shown the highest form of chivalry.
Riker:
Thank you, your majesty.
Picard:
Nevertheless, we shall still decide punishment. Could you please wait outside?

Riker thinks for an instant, before he realizes that was NOT a question, but an order.

Riker:
Certainly.

Riker walks out the door, and leans up against the wall.

Picard:
Now, what is an appropiate punishment for Prince Riker's actions?
Laforge:
I think he should be executed.
Picard:
That doesn't seem too fair or reasonable, given the way he admitted his guilt.
Data:
Your majesty, I believe the most appropiate course of action would be to place him within a battle of honor.
Crusher:
I concur, your majesty. It may amount to an execution, but at least Prince Riker maintains his dignity, and does have a chance of survival.
Laforge:
That seems reasonable, your majesty.

Picard's brow is furrowed in thought. After a few seconds, he speaks.

Picard:
It is so, then. Prince Riker will have a battle of honor in two days. Computer, record the punishment. Bring Prince Riker in.
Computer:
It is recorded.

The door opens, and Riker is brought in.

Picard:
Are you ready to hear the Table's decision?
Riker:
I am.
Picard:
It has been decided that you shall perform in a battle of honor.
Riker:
But there hasn't been such a battle, ever, on this ship.
Picard:
You protest? We could have you executed.
Riker:
I am also not combat-ready.
Picard:
You will be given time.
Riker:
How much?
Picard:
Two days.
Riker:
Two days?!? That is only delayed execution!
Picard:
Then you wish to be executed?
Riker:
No, your majesty. Is there no other alternative the Table will accept?
Picard:
None.
Riker:
Then I accept the challenge.

Over the next two days we see Prince Riker in intensive combat readiness training, guided by a reluctant, non-willing Worf.

Riker, Picard and Deanna walk to Holodeck Number 4.

Picard:
Computer.

Computer beeps.

Picard:
By royal authority, in accordance with the battle of honor proceedings which took place two days ago, deactivate the mortality failsafe.
Computer:
Checking with legal records...accepted. Program for Battle of Honor created. Prince Riker may enter when ready.

Riker is about to enter the Holodeck, when Deanna speaks.

Deanna:
Wait a minute, Riker.
Riker:
What is it?
Deanna:
Good luck.
Riker:
Thanks.

As Riker enters the Holodeck, Deanna blows him a kiss.

Riker is now on the Holodeck. The exit is closed. We see a sparse, smooth white ring with a glowing blue circle about 5 meters in radius around it. There is no weapon for Riker. However, in the near-darkness of the far side we see a large semi-human creature, wielding a hefty shield and battle axe. He is breathing heavily, and waiting.)

Riker:
(Under his breath)You shall not defeat me.

The creature stands, motionless, its red eyes glowing with a hunger for blood. Riker prepares himself and slowly advances towards the creature. When he gets near the center of the circle, the creature advances. Riker sidesteps, as does the creature. They circle each other in a deadly rhythm; sharks ready and waiting for the kill. The creature swings its huge axe. Riker tumbles quickly to the ground; the axe whiffs only a centimeter from his neck. He flys back, then darts inwards, hoping to land a crushing punch. But the creature's armor is thick - Riker only succeeds in hurting himself. He is thrown back by the blow, and lands on his back. Only a meter away, the creature jumps on Riker, pinning him. The creature raises its huge battle axe and swings down for the kill. But Riker darts a hand out and grabs ahold of the huge axe's handle, and turns it just enough so that the axe slams into the arena, next to Riker's head. The creature, dismayed, lets Riker up, as it tries to free its axe. Rolling away, Riker notices a weakness in the armor. He kicks the weakness. The armor falls away, leaving a large, still thick hide. Now, the creature is furious, and yanks its axe out easily. It spins around and swings, only to miss gravely and tumble to the floor. The axe flies out of its hand. Quickly, Riker rolls away to pick it up. The creature is bearing down on him. He closes his eyes and swings the axe. As it hits, the arena disappears, leaving Riker in the Holodeck.

Computer:
Battle of Honor program complete. You may exit at your leisure.
Riker:
Exit.

The closed holodeck doors open. Riker walks out, and re-enters the Table room, where the Table members await the outcome.

Picard:
It seems you have survived. I didn't think you had that skill.
Deanna:
He didn't.
Entire Table):
(Surprised) WHAT?!?
Deanna:
After you left, I made the program a bit easier. Not too easy, but just enough to let Prince Riker win.
Picard:
But why? After all, you, if anyone, would want to see him punished?
Deanna:
Two reasons. One, he did the honorable thing in not putting me through a formal trial. And two, he still did have to fight well, and he did that admirably. What else could we ask of our royality? In fact, what more could we ask of anyone? And he still WILL be punished, remember? If anyone wins the battle, they still lose a very important ability.
Picard:
Granted. In that case, we will not make you redo the battle of honor, but will instead enact the secondary penalty.
Riker:
You mean?
Picard:
Yes. You are no longer a member of the Table, and have no command authority on this ship. You are still a crew member, but will have little power to abuse. However, if you show you are worthy, you may be reinstated in the future.
Riker:
Understood, your majesty.
Picard:
Then this meeting of the Table is closed.

Riker and Deanna leave before anyone else. They both go to 10 Forward, where they sit down. Riker has a few questions.

Riker:
Why did you do it, Deanna?
Deanna:
Like I said in the Table meeting.
Riker:
But you left something out, didn't you?
Deanna:
Indeed I did. I didn't want you to die. I just want you to prove your worthiness, and to become a gentleman.
Riker:
I thought I was one.

Deanna laughs, then smiles a bit.

Deanna:
You're trying, but you're not quite there. At least not yet.
Riker:
Where can I learn?
Deanna:
I'm willing to help you.
Riker:
After what I did?
Deanna:
In hopes of what will become. I have faith in you.
Riker:
Thank you, m'lady. I hope I prove worthy of your compliment.
Deanna:
Of that, I have no doubt.

Fade to black as we see the Enterprise jump to warp.
